Keeping our residents from being taken advantage of by scammers is something our local law enforcement take seriously in Bladen County. Sheriff, Jim McVicker met with FEMA Security Manager, Mitchell Stevens on Thursday morning to help combat con artists preying on local citizens.

“We want everyone, especially the elderly in Bladen County, to be aware about the potential of scammers in their area.” McVicker said.

According to the two official representatives, FEMA personnel will be in the county surveying the damages and assisting residents with disaster relief in the coming days and weeks ahead. However, Stevens did note three tips to look for before accepting assistance from someone during the clean up period.

  1. FEMA representatives will never ask you for personal information, like your social security number for example.
  2. FEMA representatives will never ask you for advance payments.
  3. Some scammers may wear clothing with FEMA logs, but official FEMA representatives will have a hologram badge along with authentic FEMA uniform apparel with the Home Land Security logo as well.

Stevens reported most scammers like to prey on the elderly.  If you suspect someone is trying to scam you, please contact law enforcement immediately.
