The Bladen County Public Library will be featuring a book signing on Tuesday, August 2, at  6 p.m. with Dr. Carlos R. Hamilton Jr.  of Texas. He will be signing copies of his work, “A Rose Blooms in Texas,” which is a fictionalized accounting of his great-grandmother Berta Smith Wooters. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during the book signing event.

Bladen County Public Library Director Kelsey Edwards said Dr. Hamilton’s family migrated to Texas from Bladen County.  She said  Dr. Hamilton contacted her and has generously offered to donate the profits of the books sold during the signing to the library.

Edwards said that while researching his book, Dr. Hamilton learned his great-grandmother lived at Desserette, the Smith family plantation, in White Oak. Edwards said that Dr. Hamilton was able to travel to Bladen County and visit Desserette while researching his book.

The book describes life in East Texas during the Civil War and Wooters’ attempts at maintaining her family’s ideals of education and fair treatment of others. The work also details her beloved piano that she brought to Texas from White Oak.
