Bladen County Commissioners hear Zika Virus update

By: Erin Smith

The Bladen County Board of Commissioners met on Monday night and heard from Bladen County Department of Health and Human Services Director David Howard.

Howard updated the board on the Health Departments efforts to educate folks about Zika Virus.

Howard told the board that the numbers supplied by the state of North Carolina show there only 15 cases in the state and they are all travel related. He said in the US Territories there are 1300 cases that are vector (mosquito) borne.

“We are prepared and we are doing education across the county,” said Howard.

On state level, Howard said the state has updated the lab and are prepared to do the full range of required testing for Zika Virus.

He said the testing of pregnant mothers has to be done by a blood test and that can be done in NC.

Howard said the state is looking at revamping and reconstituting its vector control program.
