Did you know that a contracting license and county permit is required for the replacement of nearly every appliance in your home? Is your contractor licensed? If not, are you prepared to assume all liabilities for the work that is performed?

Make sure your contractor is licensed, bonded, and insured. In short, if there are bonding or insurance requirements, these need to be fulfilled in order for a contractor to get licensed.

In order to obtain a contractors’ license in most states, contractors must:

·         Meet the experience requirement for each classification

·         Have an owner or qualifying party pass two written exams, one for the business and the other for the skill

  ·         Provide proof of Workers’ Compensation Insurance and tax licenses from the Department of Revenue for state transaction privilege tax

·         Provide proof of Tax liability bond and Licenses bond

·         Pay a license fee and residential contractors must contribute to the Contractors’ Recovery Fund

 Always use licensed contractors. It just makes sense!

Choosing a Good Contractor

When choosing a contractor, get several bids so you can compare price. In order to compare price, all bids must be for the same:

• Project                          • Products
• Specifications               • Quality of work

Most contractors will try to give you what you want at the price you want to pay. However, the bid is only the starting point in your negotiations and not necessarily the bottom line.

The success of a project can hinge on the communication skills of all the people involved in the project. A good contractor understands the value and importance of clear communication, makes sure there are no misunderstandings and asks for feedback on a regular basis.
