ElizabethtownPatchThe Elizabethtown Police Department is getting ready for their 10th annual Kids Appreciation Day which is planned for Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. behind the Elizabethtown Municipal Building.

Ellen Bennett said that the event will include games for the kids, a skate boarding demonstration at the new skate park, and pony rides to name just a few of the activities planned. The highlight of the day will be a homerun derby and a basketball free throw competition. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each event.

“Parents will have a chance to meet and talk with the new Police Chief,” said Bennett.

T-shirts will also be available in adult and children’s sizes will also be available and also, the K-9 will give demonstrations of his skills, as well.  Boys and girls bicycles with helmets will also be given away.

There will also be a live DJ playing music and Bennett said folks are encouraged to come out, bring the family and enjoy the day. There will be food and drinks available for purchase including Big Moe’s barbecue sandwiches, snow cones, funnel cakes and cotton candy.

There will also be identification kits for children, displays by the Elizabethtown Fire Department, Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina Highway Patrol, Bladen County EMS and other agencies.

“This event was something Chief Kinlaw started years ago to help children become familiar with the officers,” said Bennett.

She said that a lot of children are afraid of police officers and the Kids Appreciation Day event is a way they can meet the officers and interact with them in a friendly, fun environment.

The entire event is made possible through the support and donations from local businesses, said Bennett.
