I do not know if this is TRUE but it sound better.... Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November), often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In recent years, most major retailers have opened very early and offered promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season, similar to Boxing Day sales in many Commonwealth nations. Black Friday is not a holiday, but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day. Many non-retail employees and schools have both Thanksgiving and the day after off, followed by a weekend, thereby increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005,[2] although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate, have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time.

In 2013, approximately 141 million U.S. consumers shopped during Black Friday, spending a total of $57.4 billion, with online sales reaching $1.2 billion.

The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation was made: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss ("in the red";) from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or "in the black".

Subject:BLACK FRIDAY
I am a fan of Bladen Online and visit the page daily. However, I find myself disappointed in "BOL" when i read about "is it true?" in referencing to the origination of BLACK FRIDAY. This can be found on Snopes. The reason I say that I am disappointed is simply because of what is going on in America with the race wars. I am not writing this to cause problems or call anyone out. I have respect for the individuals that are behind BOL. BOL is our local news outlet not a large national news media. Just my thoughts, HAPPY THANKSGIVING. :!thinking:

How often do each of us give any thought to where we were on Thanksgiving Days in the past? Vietnam for me. It is no fun being away from home on Thanksgiving Day and no way to get home even if one could. Thank God though, we can change it around this day be a people GIVNG THANKS. Happy Thanksgiving 2014.

How much is it worth to be home today? For sure, more than two cents.

Personally, Bill, it is disgusting to me to even see the names of the two Presidents mentioned in the same sentence.

On the other hand aren't the leaves of the bradford pear trees getting to be beautiful? Not too many things are beautiful twice, but the Bradford pear tree is beautiful this time of the year and in the spring when they are full of beautiful white blossoms.

Tomorrow night each of us will get an opportunity to attend mid week prayer meetings at the house of God. The only opportunity we will ever get to attend the last Wednesday night prayer meeting before Thanksgiving in 2014. If your local church has discontinued this service, you always have a warm welcome at Oak Grove Original Free Will Baptist church.

And that's my much more than two cents worth for today.

The road closure information is very helpful. I can't wait until all the cross line pipes are installed on Lisbon road.

Fortunately or unfortunately, in the society in which we live; there is no such thing as an unbiased news organization. They will have a slant one way or the other as we all do. How about giving us your slant on the 5,000,000 illegals that President Obama has "executive ordered" legal. I can hardly wait until the end of his presidency to see who he is going to pardon and set free from prison.

What a beautiful day to enjoy life in North Carolina. All the stir about gas prices in Mother Bladen and all, I was trying to do was point out where the lowest prices in the county could be found. If one likes the $4.00 per gallon gas better than the $274.9, why not donate the difference to the Christmas shopping spree being sponsored by the Bladenboro Police Department. Good job chief Hunt.

Word has it that the reason gas prices have come down is that President Obama used his executive order authority to circumvent congressional action to lower them. By doing so he has diverted the nations attention away from the fact that we have over 5,000,000 illegals in the US that are being given work permits to do jobs that 5,000,000 natural born American citizens could be doing to help them pay the outrageous premiums for Obamacare. And remember, these 5,000,000 illegals pay per hour will be raised to $12.00 per hour so they can send even more money back to their home countries. What a vicious position we have allowed our leaders to place our nation in. Hopefully, the Republicans can start working on getting it corrected in January. There is one good thing about President Obama's presidency though, there are only about 25 months left in it.

Great news amongst all this though is that the wife and I were able to go up to Burlington to the wedding of our great niece Brittany Mote to Spencer Graybeal. Always good for a married couple to attend a wedding ceremony ever so often. Was good to see so many folks from Bladen County up there for the ceremony. Know Brittany's Mother, Mylinda, and Dad, Wayne, appreciate so many local people attending.

And that's my two cents worth on the eve of the last Sunday before THANKSGIVING 2014.
