Kiwanis' member gives big for children

The Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown met at San Jose Restaurant for their monthly meeting Tuesday evening. The club received donations, made plans to start a Terrific Kids program at Elizabethtown Primary, and continued planning the Fifty-Fifty Fundraiser to support Bladen County Emergency Services Training Facility and the club’s children’s programs.

Mary Winfree, Lt. Govnor of Kiwanis, accepted a donations from Elizabethtown Kiwanian, Bruce Barbour in the amount of $2,500. The donation was for the Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. His donation has made him part of the Walter Zeller Fellowship with Kiwanis International. The Eliminate Project is a partnership between Kiwanis International and UNICEF to help eliminate MNT in the world. According to Kiwanis International a series of three doses of the tetanus vaccine can protect a woman and her future babies, at a cost of just $1.80.
Barbour also presented a check in the amount of $1,500 to the local club on behalf of his late sister, Pat Thompson. He said his sister Pat was very active with children’s clubs and programs out in California. Pat wanted to join a Kiwanis Club out west, but was not able to do so before she passed away. Therefore, the donation was made in her memory.
The members of the club committed to starting a Terrific Kids program at Elizabethtown Primary and will be purchasing pencils and rulers to give out to Bladen County Students. More planning the Fifty-Fifty Fundraiser to support Bladen County Emergency Services Training Facility and the club’s children’s programs on August 6th at Dublin Motor Speedway was also made.
