Sports Schedules

Football Friday
West Bladen (3-2, 6-3) at Midway (2-3, 5-4)

West Bladen’s Knights travel to Midway tonight in search of their seventh win of the season. No West Bladen team has won seven games in a season since Coach Raymond Marlowe’s 2007 Knights finished 7-6.

The Knights who have only tonight and next week’s home finale against East Bladen remaining on their schedule will get all three of the players back who were suspended due to the altercation at Heide Trask that eliminated West Bladen from play-off contention.

“These last two games are our play-offs,” said Knight Coach Russell Dove. A win tonight would assure the Knights of at least a fourth-place finish in the Four County Conference.
Football Friday
Union (2-3, 3-6) at East Bladen (4-1, 7-2)

East Bladen entertains Union tonight on Senior Night, and although the Eagles will be heavily favored, there are some personnel questions to resolve – particularly at quarterback.

Ty McMillian, a 2-year starter at quarterback, was lost with a broken wrist in the second quarter of last week’s 14-6 loss at Wallace-Rose Hill.

Junior Alex Coates finished last week’s game at quarterback for the Eagles and is expected to start tonight. Speedy sophomore Eian Hines and junior Nikita Owens have been mentioned as other possible quarterback options.

Senior Farrell Murchison headlines the Eagles’ powerful running game that averages 374 yards per game.  Farrell has rushed for 1,666 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Freshman B. J. Drake ran for 340 yards and five touchdowns to lead West Bladen’s junior varsity football team to a 52-0 Four County Conference victory over visiting Midway Thursday night.

Drake also rushed for five 2-point conversions and scored on TD runs of 70, 36, 74, 76 and 36 yards. At halftime Drake had racked up 289 yards on just 6 carries.

The Drake onslaught began on the Knights first play from scrimmage. B. J. started left, broke free down the sideline and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. Drake then plowed through the line for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead with 7:18 on the clock.
Peter Prognosticator's Pigskin Picks

The wheels on Peter Prognosticator's prediction pickup lost quite a bit of air last week. Guess it had to happen after four strong weeks. Last week's record was 9-5, bring the season mark to 61-14. Nearly half of the incorrect picks for the season came last week.

It's a new week, and away we go.

WEST BLADEN at MIDWAY -- For the Knights, it's their playoffs the next two weeks since being declared ineligible a couple of weeks ago due to a fighting incident against Trask. If West Bladen takes that approach, it can atone for last season's home loss to Midway and spoil the Raiders' Senior Night festivities. Might as well start the "playoffs" with a win. West Bladen 27, Midway 22.

East Bladen Soccer Hosts East Duplin Saturday at 3 p.m.

Fresh off their big 3-2 victory over Elizabeth City Northeastern, the East Bladen Eagles will host East Duplin, a first round winner over South Columbus, Saturday at 3 p.m.

Coach Jay Raynor's Eagles will bring a 11-7-4 record into Saturday's second round NCHSAA play-off game against the Panthers who own a 12-9-2 record and are the No. 4 seed from the East Central Conference.

Activity AT Vineyard Golf At White Lake

Lots of activity continues at Vineyard Golf. The staff has just completed a drainage program on the 8th hole which was a complete success in drying up an area that had a tendency to hold moisture.

A new web site has been launched. Please take a look at it... vineyardgolfatwhitelake.com. The toss ups continue weekly. If you are interested in playing call the pro shop at 247-6132.

Don't forget the Iron Man Tournament coming November 15.

NCHSAA Class 2-A Men’s Soccer Play-offs

East Bladen 3, Elizabeth City Northeastern 2

Senior Colby Hester fired in the game-winning goal with 1:30 remaining as East Bladen rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to claim a 3-2 victory at Elizabeth City Northeastern Wednesday night in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A play-offs.

Three seniors played key roles in the events that produced the deciding goal. Goalie Matt Massengill corralled a loose ball and boomed a 60-yard punt that forward Ryan Baxley was able to ‘trap.’ “Ryan sent a perfect ball into Colby,” said East Coach Jay Raynor. “The keeper was caught in no man’s land. Colby was running at him with a defender on his shoulder, and the ball was just enough out of the box that the keeper couldn't play it with his hands and had to try and chest it.”

SOUTHEASTERN FELLOWSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT HELD AT KEITH HILLS

The October 28 Southeastern Fellowship Golf Tournament was held at one of North Carolina's premier golf course, Keith Hill at Campbell University in Buie's Creek.

The Southeastern Fellowship Golf Association is made up of senior players from southeastern North Carolina.

The winners of the Keith Hills tournament, with a score of 55, was Matt Hardee, Mickey Brisson, Jimmy Hedgepeth and Bob Cox. Coming in second place, with a 57, was Joey Gore, Ronnie Wilkins, Johnny Malpass and Otis Evans.

The next tournament, November 4, will be held at King's Grant in Fayetteville.

East Bladen Opens Soccer Play-offs at Elizabeth City

It's 'Deja Vu' all over again Wednesday night as East Bladen's Eagles have been awarded a return trip to Elizabeth City to battle the Northeastern High Eagles in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Play-offs. Gametime is 6 p.m.

"We have had a pretty good year and to make the playoffs solidifies that," said East Bladen Coach Jay Raynor. "The boys have worked extremely hard since August 1st and to be able to continue playing into late October is a good feeling.  This team is capable of doing whatever they put their mind to and right now we are putting forth a ton of effort and playing some good soccer."

East Bladen was awarded the No. 24 seed in the Class 2-A East after they finished 8-6 in the Four County Conference and 10-7-4 overall. Northeastern tied for second place with Currituck County in the Northeastern Coastal Conference with a 7-3 record. The Elizabeth City team tied Manteo, split with Currituck and lost twice to conference champion First Flight to post a 17-3-1 record.
