Bladen Recreation Youth Football Begins Tonight
 
Bladen County Recreation's Youth Football season begins tonight (Monday) at County Park with games in three age-groups.
 
The 5-7 year-old Flag League will play on the Soccer Field. At 6 p.m. the Pirates battle the Gators, and a 6:45 the Tigers play the Ducks.
 
The 7-9 year-old Football League will play on the Football Field. At 6 p.m. the Tigers play the Bears. The Badgers have a Bye.
 
The 10-12 year-old Football League will play on the Fooball Field. At 7 p.m. the Pirates play the Crimson Tide.

West Bladen Girls Eliminated In Regional
 
West Bladen's Alicia Avellaneda and Amber Long and the Lady Knight doubles team of Madison Staton and Alanna Ludlum were eliminated in the openening round of the Class 2-A Women's Tennis Mid-East Regionals Friday at Herman Park in Goldsboro.
 
In singles matches, Avellaneda lost to Katherine Li of the School of Science & Math 6-1, 6-1, while Hannah Watlington of Bartlett-Yancey defeated Long 6-1, 6-2. In doubles play, Staton and Ludlum dropped their first round match to Anna Xu and Rachel Xu of the School of Science & Math 6-0, 6-1.
Singles Action:
 
"I thought the girls played well considering they were going up against girls that had been playing tennis since they were in elementary school," said West Bladen Coach Jeff Atkinson. "But that is the way it is around our area. We gave them a battle but just came up short. It was good experience for our younger players to see what it is like at the next level."

Golf Notes From Vineyard Golf At White Lake
 
A new trap to better frame the green has been installed on the 15th hole. Some low scores shot recently were Luke Gooden, 69, Mac Porter 72 and Jake Womble 71.
 
The winners of the Friday Toss Up were Mac Porter, Stacey Owen, Chad Porter and David Cross. The Saturday Toss up was won by Luke Gooden, Jason Douglas, Lin Melvin and Ronnie Tart.

Girls Basketball work-outs at West Bladen High School will begin Monday, October 20 and last from 3:15-4:30 p.m. each day through Wednesday, Oct. 22. The work-outs will resume Monday, Oct. 27 and continue Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 3:15-4:30 each day.
 
Try-outs begin Wednesday, Oct. 29 and continue Thursday, Oct. 30 from 3:15-5 p.m. each day. Players must have a current sports physical in order to participate.

Clarkton DYB  Haunted Trail Begins Friday
 
Clarkton Dixie Youth Baseball will be providing a Haunted Trail for this year's Halloween Festivities begin Friday, Oct. 24.
 
The Haunted Trail is located at 395 Priminter Rd in Clarkton. The Trail will open Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. and will be open from 7-12 each night on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25. The Trail will resume operation on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and will continue nightly from 7-12 p.m. through Saturday, November 1. Admission will be $5 per person. 

Middle School Football
Clarkton School of Discovery 36, Tar Heel 16
 
Quarterback Pierce Melvin and Adonis Avery combined for 5 touchdowns and 3 conversions and led the Clarkton School of Discovery Blue Devils to a 36-16 Bladen Five Middle School Conference victory at Tar Heel Thursday night.
 
Avery raced 65 yards for the first Blue Devil touchdown, then caught a pass from Melvin for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 Clarkton lead.
 
Greyson Heustess hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Melvin for the second Blue Devil touchdown. The conversion failed, but CSD still led 14-0.
 
Melvin broke loose on the keeper and galloped 40 yards for the next Clarkton touchdown. Melvin then tossed a pass to Seven Campbell for the 2-point conversion and a 22-0 Blue Devil lead. 

NCHSAA Class 2-A Volleyball Play-offs
South Lenoir 3, East Bladen 0
 
South Lenoir defeated East Bladen 3-0 Saturday night at Deep Run in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Volleyball Play-offs by game scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-12.
 
Senior Abbey Norris pounded in 9 kills, 3 aces and 3 service points to lead the Lady Eagle attack. Junior Lacey Suggs drilled in 3 aces, a kill and 4 service points.
 
Junior setter Miller Heustess was credited with 11 assists, an ace and a service point for East Bladen. Sophmore teammate Claire Campbell racked up with 3 service points, a kill and an assist.

The 2014 East Bladen Homecoming Queen is Alieyah Davis and the Homecoming King is Brandon Jones.
 
Both were honored at halftime of the East Bladen-Trask football game at Lenon Fisher Stadium.

West Bladen piled up 418 rushing yards, but still need a big Stephon McDonald 55-yard interception return in the final period to finally put away Pender County 54-27 Friday night in Four County Conference football action at Pender.
 
Seniors Colby Lewis and Malcolm Vaught combined for 5 rushing touchdowns, and quarterback Lewis connected with McDonald for another TD, but the stubborn Patriots came up with the big plays to stay within 33-27 at the third quarter break.
 
The Knights drove 51 yards on their first possession of the final period to stretch the lead to 39-27 when Lewis kept the ball on a 4-yard touchdown run. Senior Kesean Sutton keyed the drive with runs of 12, 8 and 12 yards.

East Bladen’s suffocating defense held Heide Trask to minus 10 yards of total offense Friday night , and senior Farrell Murchison set a school career rushing record as the Eagles celebrated Homecoming with a 42-0 Four County  Conference victory.
 
The Titans ran 21 running plays that netted 23 yards in losses. Senior quarterback Dylan Kraft completed 2 of 7 passes for 13 yards – both to Steven Jordan.
 
”The defense keeps getting better each week,” said Eagle Coach Robby Priest. “They are really flying around and having fun hitting!” Seniors Darius Ballard, Larrell Murchison and Isaiah Young all had solo tackles for loss in the game. 

Bladenboro Stats In Elizabethtown Win
 
The Bladenboro trio of Kerron Washington, Keshawn Lewis and Deshawn Hines combined for 275 yards rushing and scored all 28 Bulldog points as Bladenboro Middle clinched the Bladen Five Conference football championship with a 28-22 victory over Elizabethtown Thursday night.
 
Washington rushed for 102 yards, two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. Hines ran for 99 yards and a touchdown. Lewis finished with 74 yards rushing, a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Lewis was the defensive star for the winners forcing 2 fumbles and making the game-clinching interception.
 
With 1:30 left to play, Elizabethtown faced a third down and 2 yards to go situation at the Bladenboro 30 yardline. "Our defense stood tall by stringing out a sweep to the wide side of the field and tackled the ball carrier for a 8 yard loss," said Bulldog Coach Richie Love.

East Bladen will celebrate Homecoming tonight as the Heide Trask Titans from Rocky Point visit Lenon Fisher Stadium. Coach Robby Priest’s Eagles hope to run their perfect Four County  Conference record to 4-0 as they get ready for a first-place showdown at Wallace-Rose Hill next week.
 
Last week the Eagles piled up 437 yards rushing and 554 yards of total offense as they pounded Pender County 54-0. The Eagles are averaging 391 yards rushing and 436 total yards per game. East Bladen has outscored their opponents by an average of 37-16 on  the season.
 
Senior Farrell Murchison rushed for 4 touchdowns and 134 yards to lead the Eagle touchdown parade against Pender. For the season Farrell has racked up 1,314 yards and 20 touchdowns. 
Football Friday
West Bladen (2-1, 5-2) at Pender County (0-3, 1-6)
 
West Bladen posted their fifth win of  the season Friday night 46-24 at Heide Trask which qualified Coach Russell Dove's Knights for the Class 2-A play-offs, but because of a third quarter scuffle that saw 3 Knights and 4 Titans ejected, the Knights were disqualified from the play-offs by the NCHSAA.
 
Tonight West Bladen looks to regroup from that setback as the Knights travel to Pender County for the Patriots Homecoming  game.
 
Senior Malcom Vaught was the big playmaker for the Knights against Trask. Vaught rushed 8 times for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns. The versatile senior picked off a Trask pass and returned it 77 yards for another touchdown. Vaught also stripped a Titan runner of the ball at the Knight 2 yardline to stop a Trask threat.
Men's Soccer
Wallace-Rose Hill 2, East Bladen 0
 
Wallace-Rose Hill scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat East Bladen 2-0 in Four County Conference men's soccer action at East Thursday night.
 
"We had a great opportunity midway through the first half," said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor. "Tyler Polk received a great ball from Colby Hester and went 1 on 1 with the keeper. Tyler took a touch and hit the ball with his left that went just wide of the post. It was a great look on goal and would have changed the game."
 
The game went back and forth all night. "I thought we played Wallace pretty well tonight," continued Raynor. "We came out and followed our gameplan to a T. The only issue was that we didn't put the ball in the back of the net."
 
Raynor praised the play of midfielders Ryan Baxley and Alex Felder and backs Issac Monroe, Chuckie Monroe, Jake Mazur and Nate Ventura.

Middle School Football
Bladenboro 28, Elizabethtown 22
 
Bladenboro jumped in front with a pair of early touchdowns and clinched the Bladen Five Middle School Conference Championship Thursday night with a 28-22 football victory over visiting Elizabethtown.
 
James Higgins rushed for 160 yards, a touchdown and a pair of 2-point conversions to lead the Cougar offense. Higgins scored his touchdown on a 5-yard run.
Higgins also threw a 40-yard halfback pass to Najuan McKoy for the final Elizabethtown touchdown.
 
Quarterback Keyshaun Davis kept the ball and darted 20 yards to score the other Cougar touchdown.

East Bladen JV 38, Heide Trask 0
 
Xavier Wooten and B.J. Robinson scored two touchdowns each to lead East Bladen to a 38-0 Four County Conference junior varsity football victory over Heide Trask at Rocky Point Thursday night.
 
Wooten rushed for a pair of touchdowns and also ran for a pair of 2-point conversion as he accounted for 16 of the East Bladen points. Robinson raced 40 yards for one touchdown and finished with 2 touchdowns and a 2-point conversion run.
 
Fullback Xavia McDowell bulled his way into the end zone for the other Eagle touchdown, and he also carried into the end zone for a 2-point conversion.
 
After a couple of lengthy delays for Titan injuries in the third quarter, the decision was made to run a continuous running clock for the remainder of the contest.
 
Coach Ritchie Priest's Eagles are now 3-1 in the Four County and 5-2 overall.

East Bladen's Lady Eagles will travel to Deep Run Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for an opening round game in the NCHSAA Class 2-A Volleyball Play-offs against South Lenoir.
 
Coach Jennifer Hair's Lady Eagles (8-9) qualified as the No. 3 seed from the Four County Conference. South Lenoir's Lady Blue Devils sport a 17-3 record and are the top seed from the Eastern Carolina Conference.

First Flight defeated West Bladen 5-2 Tuesday in the first round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Dual Team Women's Tennis State Playoffs at Kill Devil Hills. West Bladen finished with a team record of 12-3 that is the best in school history for women's tennis.
 
Both coaches agreed before the match that since it was such a long travel distance for West Bladen that once one of the teams secured the 5 wins needed for victory, the match would be over at that point. The match lasted took over two hours to decide the outcome. Therefore, two doubles matches were stopped before completion.

Clarkton School of Discovery 2, East Arcadia 0

The Clarkton Lady Blue Devils' volleyball team became the undefeated conference champions with a win over East Arcadia Tuesday afternoon.

In the first set, Ting Lin and Ashley Hardin hit early return points to give Clarkton the lead.  Hardin then hit a nice service point followed by two return points from Erica McKoy and one from Lin, making the score 6-4 in favor of the Blue Devils.  Lin then scored two service points with one ace.

Constance Smith scored off a great pass from Carleigh DeVane, keeping Lin's serve alive.  Lin then hit four more service points before Smith once again scored on a return that kept Lin at the line.  Lin smoked five more service points, including an ace by the Lady Panthers.  Camille Campbell kept Lin at serve by scoring on a return and Lin was able to end the set with five more service points, sixteen in total, giving Clarkton the 25-4 win.

First Flight defeated West Bladen 5-2 Tuesday in the first round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Dual Team Women's Tennis State Playoffs at Kill Devil Hills. West Bladen finished with a team record of 12-3 that is the best in school history for women's tennis.

"I thought our girls did a good job being able to sustain rallies with them," said Lady Knight Coach Jeff Atkinson. "It just seem that they were better being more consistent and did not make that many unforced errors. I felt that we made a good showing and were able to give them a game."   

Middle School Volleyball
Bladenboro 2, Elizabethtown 1
 
Bladenboro defeated Elizabethtown 2-1 Tuesday in Bladen Five Middle School Conference volleyball action at East Arcadia. 
 
The Lady Bulldogs won the first set, but Elizabethtown battled back to even the match with a victory in set two. Bladenboro then took the decisive set 3 and the match.
 
Bladenboro finishes regular-season play at 2-2 and will be the No. 3 seed in next Tuesday's Bladen Five Tournament at Tar Heel. The Lady Bulldogs will play No. 2 seed Tar Heel.  Elizabethtown will be the No.4 seed in the tournament and will open against No. 5 East Arcadia.

Kayla Thompson Has Top-20 Finish at Texas
 
Clarkton native Kayla Thompson posted the first Top-20 finish of her young career as she led UNC-Wilmington's Lady Seahawks to a 12th place finish in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational that concluded Tuesday at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, TX.
 
Thompson, a freshman, finished with a 77 Tuesday for a 3-day total of 228 which was good enough to tie for 19th place. "Kayla had a great tournament and had her first top-20 finish against a tough field," said UNC-W Coach Cindy Ho in an interview with uncwsports.com. "I was very pleased with how she performed and competed this week. She was able to play well against a tough field."
 
The Lady Seahawks carded a 311 Tuesday for a 3-day total of 938 which was 2 shots behind 11th place Indiana. Tulane rallied from seven shots back to tie UNLV for first place in the tournament. Baylor's Hayley Davis took medalist honors with a 3-day total of 214 which was one shot better than UNLV's Dana Finkelstein.

East Bladen's Lady  Eagles celebrated Senior Night with a 3-0 Four County Conference victory over visiting West Bladen Tuesday night by game scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-20.
 
Senior Abbey Norris was honored during the Senior Night festivities, then knocked in 12 kills, 4 service points, an ace, a block, 3 back-row attacks and collected 3 assists to lead the Lady Eagle hitters.
 
Junior Lacey Suggs slammed in 7 kills, 8 service points and tipped in a winner for East. Junior setter Miller Heustess racked up 22 assists and 5 service points, and sophmore Lexie Mendell filled the stat sheet with 8 service points, 2 aces, a kill, 2 tips, a block and 2 back-row attacks.

Sophmore Jenna Dove poured in 21 service points to lead West Bladen to a 2-0 Four County Conference junior varsity victory at East Bladen by game scores of 25-17 and 25-15 in the season finale for both teams.
 
Dove also hammered in 9 aces and 3 kills, and freshman Elizabeth Allbright knocked in 7 service points, 2 aces and a kill for the Lady Knights. Sophmore Morgan Schumacher fired in 3 kills and 3 service points.
 
Kaylee Stevens smashed in 3 kills and 2 service points. Freshmen Brinkley Collier and Mikayla Winebarger added 1 service point and 1 ace each for the Lady Knights.

Iron Man Captain’s Choice Tournament Scheduled At Vineyard Golf At White Lake.....Entrants Have An Opportunity To Win $5,000.00 Or $10,000.00
 
Jake Womble, Director of Golf at Vineyard Golf At White Lake, has announced the first tournament ever held at this new golf course between Elizabethtown and White Lake. The 2014 Vineyard Golf Tournament will be an Iron Man Captain’s Choice Tournament. It will be held Saturday, November 15th with the tee time set at 12 noon.
 
The format will be 4-man Captain’s Choice with each player allowed to use only three clubs and a putter. The cost is $300.00 per team with all proceeds going to Bladen County Shrine Club.

 The East Bladen Booster Club is holding a raffle for a YETI Cooler that has been donated to the club by the Big Blue Store. Proceeds from the raffle will help out with football. Raffle tickets are $2 each and will be available at all East Bladen home football games
