Sports Schedules

Middle School Football
Clarkton School of Discovery 46, Elizabethtown 6

By Marsha Burney

Clarkton School of Discovery’s football team clinched second place in the Bladen Five Middle School Conference Thursday night with a resounding 46-6 win over Elizabethtown Middle.

Blue Devil Quarterback Pierce Melvin connected on five-for-five passes in the game for a total of 90 passing yards.  Melvin was also the leading rusher for Clarkton, rushing for 122 yards on nine carries.  On defense, Melvin pulled five tackles for his Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils rushed for a total of 181 yards, with Melvin, Adonis Avery, Eric Chancy, Seven Campbell, and Dan Tatum amassing the yardage.

Clarkton’s leading tacklers were Adonis Avery (11), Gabriel McDowell (6), Drew Harris (6), Lawson Hester (6), Pierce Melvin (5), Dan Tatum (4), Cody Butler (2), Shy Pone (2), Seven Campbell (1), and Monte Fleming (1).

Clarkton ended the season at 4-2.

Middle School Football
Clarkton School of Discovery 48, Elizabethtown 6

Clarkton School of Discovery built a 38-6 halftime lead en route to a 48-6 Bladen Five Middle School Conference victory at Elizabethtown Thursday night. More details when they become available.

Middle School Football
Bladenboro 36, Tar Heel 8

Bladenboro's Bulldogs completed an undefeated season Thursday night with a 36-8 Bladen Five Middle School Conference victory at Tar Heel.

Coach Richie Love's Bulldogs, the Bladen Five champions, completed a perfect 6-0 season with the victory.

Kerron Washington rushed for 145 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Bladenboro offense. Washington bolted straight through the line and raced 43 yards for the first Bulldog touchdown with 3:43 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Keshawn Lewis ran the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 Bladenboro lead.

After stopping Tar Heel, the Bulldogs scored again as Lewis circled right end and sprinted 60 yards for a touchdown with only 12 seconds remaining in the quarter. The conversion failed and Bladenboro led 14-0.

Football Friday

East Bladen (4-0, 7-1) at Wallace-Rose Hill (4-0, 8-0) Sole possession of first-place in the Four County Conference is on the line tonight in Wallace as the league’s only remaining unbeaten teams square-off with league title hopes and top seed implications at stake.

Coach Robby Priest’s Eagles already own a 27-21 victory over Clinton, so a win tonight puts East Bladen in the driver’s seat for the league title and the top 2-A play-off spot.

Wallace-Rose Hill still has the season finale with Clinton remaining, but a win tonight would keep Coach Joey Price’s Bulldogs atop the conference and the Class 1-A state rankings.

Football Friday
Clinton (3-1, 6-1) at West Bladen (3-1, 6-2)

Looking at West Bladen’s schedule in the pre-season, there were four games that stood out as opportunities; games the Knights needed to post a win or two in to move into the top tier of the Class 2-A teams in the area. Tonight’s game against Coach Bob Lewis’ Clinton Dark Horses is one of those games.

Thus far Coach Russell Dove’s Knights have held serve in the games in which they were favored, and their two losses have been against teams ranked in the Top Ten (Whiteville & Wallace-Rose Hill) in the state Class 1-A rankings.

A year ago Clinton’s Silas Herring ran for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Dark Horses to a 42-29 victory over West. Herring has graduated, but sophomore Raheem Skinner headlines the Clinton running game with 1,035 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Men's Soccer
East Bladen 2, Union 0

Freshman Brooks McGill and senior Colby Hester scored goals as East Bladen concluded regular-season play with a 2-0 Four County Conference victory over visiting Union Thursday night.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half. "We talked at halftime about settling down and playing our game," said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor. "I thought we played down to Union's level and played their game. Union plays very direct and over the top and for some reason we started doing the same. Once we settled down the game got a little easier for us."

Raynor noted that, "senior Ryan Baxley and junior Alex Felder calmed down and controlled the midfield in the second half. Our three forwards were able to make good runs behind their backline which created a lot of opportunities for us."
JV Football
West Bladen JV 36, Clinton 30

B. J. Drake rushed for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead West Bladen to a 36-30 Four County Conference junior varsity football victory at Clinton Thursday night.

It was believed to be the first victory ever for a West Bladen football team over Clinton.

James Moore ran for 77 yards and a touchdown for the Knights who piled up 345 yards rushing. Quarterback Weston Pidgeon added 2 touchdowns and 33 yards rushing and completed one pass to Drake for 9 yards.

West Bladen's T. J. Kemp returned the opening kick-off 37 yards to the Clinton 43 yardline. On the first play from scrimmage, Drake broke free around the right side and galloped 43 yards for the first Knight touchdown. Drake carried the ball into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 West lead only 24 seconds into the game.

Peter Prognosticator's Pigskin Picks

A 14-2 record in the fourth week moves the season mark to 52-9, which is an 85.2 percentage. Wins by the North Carolina Tar Heels and Syracuse Orangemen cost Peter a perfect week. Here's the picks for week five.

CLINTON at WEST BLADEN -- The Knights' strong play continued a week ago at Pender even after learning they had been declared ineligible for the state playoffs. It was good to see. But the toughest part of West Bladen's season comes at the end, and it starts against the once-beaten Dark Horses, who've allowed only 75 points in seven games. Should be a tough, hard-nosed high school football game. Clinton 27, West Bladen 21.

JV Football
Wallace-Rose Hill JV 50, East Bladen 14

Nine Eagle fumbles enabled Wallace-Rose Hill to pull away in the second half for a 50-14 Four County Conference junior varsity football victory at East Bladen Thusday night.

The Eagles scored on their first two possessions to take a 14-13 lead. Quarterback Sincere Smith kept the ball and scooted 20 yards for the first East Bladen touchdown. B. J. Robinson dashed 5 yards for the second Eagle touchdown.

Fullback Xavia McDowell powered into the end zone for the 2-point conversion and the 14-13 lead. McDowell led the Eagle rushing attack in the game.

Men's Soccer
East Bladen 4, West Bladen 0

Four different players scored goals as East Bladen celebrated Senior Night with a 4-0 Four County Conference victory over West Bladen Wednesday night.

Ten East Bladen seniors and their families were recognized at halftime. Those seniors are  Wayde Owen, Matt Massengill, Ryan Baxley, Isacc Monroe, Nathan Sanders, Colby Hester, Jake Mazur, Brandon "Chuckie" Monroe, Tyler Polk, and Nathan Ventura. "We celebrated 10 great kids who have contributed a lot towards our soccer program at East," said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor.

Owen had a couple of early shots on goal, but the game remained scoreless until late in the first half. "Colby beat the left back and sent a perfect ball to Alex Felder who was streaking into the box, and Alex put the pass into the top of the net," said Raynor.

Senior Colby Hester pounced on a loose ball and fired in the winning goal in the second overtime to give East Bladen a 2-1 Four County Conference men's soccer victory at Union Tuesday night.

In the first minute of the second overtime, Eagle senior Tyler Polk was drilled by a questionable shot from a Union player that resulted in a red card. "Tyler got pretty roughed up on that one," said Eagle Coach Jay Raynor. "My boys kept their composure and stuck to the game plan. I commend my captains (Ryan Baxley and Matt Massengill) for that."

Union was playing with only ten men after the red card was issued. Hester and senior Nathan Sanders pressured the Spartan sweeper forcing a loose ball. "Colby hopped on the loose ball and put it home," said Raynor. "He is our go-to-guy. When he plays with all his heart and effort, he can't be stopped."

Singles Action:

"I thought the girls played well considering they were going up against girls that had been playing tennis since they were in elementary school," said West Bladen Coach Jeff Atkinson. "But that is the way it is around our area. We gave them a battle but just came up short. It was good experience for our younger players to see what it is like at the next level."
