Allen Has Hole-In-One At Carolina Sands
 
Jody Allen of Lumberton had a hole-in-one Saturday, May 18 at Carolina Sands Golf Course located between Elizabethtown and White Lake. Allen had the ace on hole #2 which plays 115 yards.
 
Playing with Allen were Anthony Locklear, Ricky Hardin, Randy Chavis and Cory Hardin.

NCHSAA Class 2-A Softball Play-offs

Senior Abbey Walters fired a two-hit shutout and struck out seven batters to lead West Bladen's Lady Knights to a 2-0 victory over Eastern Randolph in the third round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Softball Play-offs Friday night at West.

Coach Pam Stephens' Lady Knights improve to 24-2 and advance to host South Lenoir in a fourth round play-off Tuesday at 6 p.m. South Lenoir defeated Whiteville 10-2 Friday and has beaten North Brunswick, Providence Grove and now Whiteville by identical scores in the play-offs.
 
Walters walked three and surrendered only two infield singles. No Lady Wildcat batter was able to hit the ball into the outfield.

 
 

HCA Softball Team 7, Halifax Academy 0

 

The Harrells Christian Academy softball team defeated Halifax Academy 7-0 Friday in   the first game of the final four of the NCISAA State 2A Softball Tournament at William Peace University in Raleigh. With that win, they advanced to play Fayetteville Christian School at 3:00 p.m.
 
The HCA Lady Crusaders successfully defeated Fayetteville Christian 6-5 in extra innings. Regan Murphy drove in the winning run in the 8th to secure the win.  The Crusaders will play at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow for the state title. That game will also be played on the campus of William Peace University in Raleigh.

 
 
 
 

East Bladen All-Sports Banquet 2013
 
Seniors Melissa Macon and Latyson Robinson were named the Female and Male Athletes of the Year Thursday night at the East Bladen High School All-Sports Banquet.
 
Macon played volleyball and basketball this season, while Robinson, an All-State offensive tackle, was a key member of the Eagle football and basketball teams.
 
Kaycie Skipper received the Wade A. Taylor III Award. Sophmore Natalie Hardin was awarded the Joe Bostic Memorial Sports Scholarship, and freshman Alex Coates received the Lacy West Memorial Baseball Award.

West Bladen Hosts Eastern Randolph In 3rd Round Play-off Game
 
West Bladen's Lady Knights who rallied from the brink of elimination Tuesday face another Mid-State Conference foe, Eastern Randolph, today at 6 p.m. in the third round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Softball Play-offs.
 
Tuesday the Lady Knights were down to their last strike, but senior Danielle Dove fought off several 0-2 pitches, then drilled a two-run inside-the-park home run to right-centerfield to tie the game. 
 
Junior Taylor Stephens doubled and scored the game-winner when senior Robin Coleman hammered a line drive to the fence in left-centerfield to complete a 4-3 victory over Jordan-Matthews. 

 
 

Mikey Inman Pitches Seven Innings; Methodist Wins in 10th
 
West Bladen grad Mikey Inman pitched seven strong innings, and his Methodist Monarchs pushed across a run in the tenth inning to edge top-seeded Huntingdon College, AL 4-3 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III South Regional Wednesday in Millington, TN.
 
Inman gave up three runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out three. The Tar Heel native left the game with the score tied.
 

 
 
 
 

HCA Girl's Varsity Softball Team Advances
 
Harrells Christian Academy girls varsity softball team defeated Northside Christian Tuesday 11-1 in the first round of NCISAA playoffs.

The lady Crusaders jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first inning and closed out the game in 5 innings.
 
HCA pitchers posted 10 strike-outs, gave up 2 hits and had one error.
 
Harrell's advances to the second round of NCISAA playoffs.  They will play William Peace University on Friday, May 17 at 12:30 p.m.

 
 
 
 

NCHSAA Class 2-A Softball Play-offs

Down to her team's final strike Danielle Dove battled to keep the play-off hopes alive for herself and six senior teammates Tuesday night.
 
After fouling off several 0-2 pitches, Dove hammered a liner to the fence in right-centerfield for a two-run inside-the-park home run that tied the score and propelled the Lady Knights to a 4-3 victory over Jordan-Matthews and into Friday's third round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Softball Play-offs.
 
Pinch-hitter Kristen Dickerson was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh inning, and West Bladen trailing 3-1. One out later, Dove came to the plate as the final hope and ripped the shot to the fence that scored Dickerson ahead of her.

NCHSAA Class 2-A State Golf Tournament
 
Cameron Winebarger fired a 77 Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 164 that led West Bladen's scoring in the NCHSAA Class 2-A State Golf Tournament at Longleaf Golf & Country Club in Southern Pines.
 
Winebarger's 77 paced the Knights to a second-day total of 362 and a total of 719 for the tournament. Teammate Kayla Thompson finished with an 86 Tuesday and posted a two-day total of 170 for the Knights.
 
Mason Smith followed with a 98, and teammates Gage Bailey and Brett Jackson both carded 101's in Tuesday's second round. Zane Singletary had a 116 for West.
 
Newton-Conover captured the state team championship with a 611 two-day total. North Lincoln was second with a 615 total. Newton-Conover's Alex Hefner took medalist honors with a two-day total of 142.

2nd Annual West Bladen Tennis Tournament to be held in June
 
The 2nd West Bladen Tennis Tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 14th and 15th at West Bladen High School Tennis Courts.  Singles, doubles and mixed doubles events will be held and USTA rules will apply.  Matches will be two out of three set with all matches playing a 10 point tie-breaker instead of a full third set.
 
Entry fee will be $20.00 for singles and $15.00 per person for doubles.

Semi-Pro Football Coming To Elizabethtown
 
Marcello Newkirk was the speaker at the monthly meeting of the Elizabethtown-White Lake Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday.
 
Newkirk is working to bring semi-pro football team to Bladen County.
 
According to the speaker, the season would run from February to June, and that includes the playoffs.  The proposed developmental football team will be the Elizabethtown Vipers and play in the East Coast Association.  He is preparing to begin play in 2014.
 
Newkirk has played for Greensboro for four years before his "big step" to launch a new franchise.

 
 
 

Bladenboro Dixie Youth Softball Tournament Planned
 
Dixie Youth Softball Tournament at Wateree Park in Bladenboro will be on Friday May 31st @ 7:00 pm and Saturday June 1st @ 9:00 am.  There will be Men and Women’s Divisions.  Playing ASA Rules and you must be at least 18 years old to participate.  Men Entry Team Fee is $150.00 and Women’s Entry Team Fee is $100.00.  There will also be a Homerun Derby Friday night from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm. $15.00 to register and all proceeds will benefit local Eagle Scout Project for new sign at Wateree.  Deadline for all registration is 05/30/13.  If interested in participating contact CHAP Coordinator, Britt Huggins at 910-872-3593 or Richie Love at 910-527-8849. Proceeds from tournament will help benefit Wateree Park Revitalization Effort and Dixie Youth Baseball!

NCHSAA Class 2-A State Golf Tournament
 
Kayla Thompson fired an 84 Monday to lead West Bladen in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A State Tournament at Longleaf Golf & Country Club in Southern Pines.
 
Cameron Winebarger carded an 87 for the Knights, and teammate Gage Bailey finished with an 89. Brett Jackson posted a 97 for the fourth West Bladen score. Other West Bladen scores were a 107 from Mason Smith and a 113 by Tyler Tinkle.
 
The Knights recorded a 357 first round total. Newton-Conover leads the tourney with a 299 team score. North Lincoln is in second place with a 307 total.

Baseball Camp Scheduled For June at Elizabethtown Middle
 
A baseball camp for boys ages 10 years and older will be held at Elizabethtown Middle School on June 13 thru 15.
 
Elizabethtown Coach Tripp Lancaster who starred at Methodist University and Lenoir Rhyne University pitcher Jared Carroll will conduct the camp.
 
The camp will be conducted from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. each day. The camp fees will be $65 for all three days, or $25 for a single day. 

 

American Legion Baseball Tryouts May 18
 
Whiteville Post 137 will hold tryouts at Legion Field in Whiteville on Saturday May 18th; at 2:00 p.m. Registration and tryouts will be held rain or shine. American Legion baseball is open to any player born in 1994 or later. All interested players should contact Dean Sasser at (910) 641-7676 for additional information.
