Suggs & Thompson Named To Class 2-A All-State Team

   

East Bladen sophmore Lacey Suggs and West Bladen senior Courtney Thompson have both been named to the 2014 NCPreps.com Class-2A All-State Basketball Team.

  

Suggs led the East Bladen scoring with over 19 points per game as the Lady Eagles posted a 28-2 record and reached the Eastern Regionals. The versatile sophmore also contributed 5.4 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 3.1 assists per game.
Suggs has also been named the Four County Conference Player of the Year, All-Cape Fear Region First Team by the Fayetteville Observer, All-NCBCA District 4 First Team, and StarNews All-Area Second Team . 

East Bladen At West Bladen Rained Out; Play Wednesday
 
The East Bladen at West Bladen Baseball, Softball, Girls Soccer and JV Baseball games scheduled for tonight (Tuesday) have been postponed due to rain and wet grounds and are rescheduled for Wednesday at West Bladen.

Four County Conference Track Meet Results
 
East Bladen’s Dwight Campbell and Ethan Hines won individual events in the Four County Conference Track Meet at Heide Trask.
 
Campbell took first place in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 17.84 seconds. Hines won the long jump with a leap of 17-10.5.
 
West Bladen finished sixth in the Boys Team Standings with 61 points, and East Bladen was eighth with 38 points. Heide Trask was first with 170 points.
 
Trask was also first in the Girls Standings with 134 points. West Bladen finished seventh with 42 points, followed by East Bladen with 12.5 points.
 
All of the Bladen County athletes who scored points in the meet follow.  

Recreation Sotball & Dixie Boys Baseball Registration Deadline

Registration for Bladen County Parks and Recreation Girl’s Softball, ages 5-16, and Dixie Boys Baseball, ages 13-14, ends next Monday, April 21st.  The fee for each of these is $30.  Please come by the Parks and Recreation office to register or call 862-6770 for more information.

HCA Varsity Baseball 10, O'Neal 0
 
Harrells Christian Academy baseball team pounded O'Neal 10-0 Friday in a game at O'Neal.
 
Cory Sutton had 4 RBI's for the Crusaders.  He had 3 hits.. Mike Smith had 3 hits for the winners and drove in 2 runs.  Joseph Phaneuf was 2 or 2 and had 3 RBI's.
 
Harrells never trailed in the game after scoring 2 runs in the first inning.
 
Mike Smith gave up no runs and just 2 hits for HCA to pick up the win.

HCA Softball Team 5, Wake 3
 
Anna Devane and Daisha Jordan had 2 hits each to lead the Harrell's Crusaders over Wake, 5-3.  The game was played Friday at Wake.
 
Abigail Blanchard was the winning pitcher going 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 runs.

White Lake Sprint Triathlon 2014 Results
    
Robert Vangraafeiland from Rolesville posted the best time for men in the White Lake Sprint Triathlon 2014 that was held Sunday at White Lake. Vangraafeiland posted a time of 1:04:46. 227 male athletes participated in the event.
 
The best time for women was posted by Alison Klaitman from Chapel Hill. Her time was 1:16:08. There were 126 females participating in this Triathlon which included a 750 meter swim, a 14 mile bike and a 5K run.

Hines Brothers Open Basketball Training Clinics
 
A pair of brothers with Bladen County roots have returned home and are looking to provide preliminary basketball instruction training for young people.
 
The brothers are Eric Hines who played on some very good Bladenboro teams for Coach Wayne Williamson in the late 1970’s, and Jamie O. Hines who was a star football quarterback in the early days of Midget Football in Bladen County.
 
The Hines brothers have created Hinesight Basketball Training to help youth develop into positive and productive individuals through the process of learning the game of basketball. 

Cape Fear JV 11, West Bladen 0  Softball

   

Cape Fear defeated visiting West Bladen 11-0 Friday in non-conference jayvee softball action.

  

Elsie Guzman cracked two hits to lead the West Bladen hitters. Kathryn Schultz pitched for the Lady Knights and allowed seven hits, four walks and two hit batters, while striking out one.

  

The Lady Knights are now 8-4 on the season

West Bladen JV 12, Wallace-Rose Hill 10 Baseball
  
West Bladen outlasted visiting Wallace-Rose Hill 12-10 Friday in Four County Conference junior varsity baseball action.
   
The Knights built a 5-0 lead with five runs in the second inning. Walks to Jarrett Williams and Ray Jones sandwiched around a single by shortstop Weston Pidgeon loaded the bases, and Seth Britt’s walk plated the first run.
  
Sophmore Donald McCullum laced a two-run single to left-centerfield, and Trent West rapped a two-run single to centefield.
   
The Bulldogs tied the game 5-5 in the third, but West Bladen retook the lead with three runs in their half of the inning. Troy Edge belted a single to right, Brandon Carson walked, and Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases. 

West Bladen JV 19, West Columbus 2  Baseball
  
Freshman Trent West pitched a four-hitter, and West Bladen pounded out twelve hits as the Knight jayvees blitzed West Columbus 19-2 Thursday in non-conference baseball action at Cerro Gordo.
  
West gave up two runs – one earned – walked five and struck out six.
  
Chandler Lennon hammered a two-run triple to ignite a seven-run Knight first inning rally. Troy Edge raked a run-scoring single to left, and Weston Pidgeon knocked in a run with a single to right, and Seth Britt slammed a run-scoring double.
  
The Knight lead grew to 11-0 in the second. Edge laced a double to right-centerfield and raced home when Brandon Carson swatted a single to right. Pidgeon drove in a run with a single to right, and Britt rapped a single through the middle.

White Lake Half 2014 Triathlon Results
   
Derek Kidwell of Mooresville won the White Lake Half 2014 Triathlon event held Saturday at White Lake. Kidwell’s time was 4:13:17. The triathlon consisted of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run.
 
The ladies winner was Mary Robbins of Cary with a time of 4:56:25.

Bladenboro Rotary Club Announces Plans for Annual Tournament
 
The 16th Annual Bladenboro Rotary Golf Tournament will be held Friday, May 9th at Land O Lakes Golf Course near Whiteville.  Golfers will be treated to lunch before they play and a meal afterwards.  The field is limited to the first 30 teams.  Call 674-1995 to enter.
 
Since 1988, over $47,000 has been raised to help fund scholarships for Bladenboro and West Bladen High School school seniors.  The Bladenboro Rotary Club established the J.W. and Martha Black Scholarship in 1967 to provide funds for college expenses for deserving seniors.  The is tournament is the club's major fundraiser, and the commitment to West Bladen high school in memory of two outstanding educators.

East Bladen 6, Clinton 5  Baseball
   
Junior Colby Hester made a spectacular diving catch to end the game and preserve a 6-5 victory for East Bladen over visiting Clinton Friday night in Four County Conference baseball action.
  
The Dark Horses had the tying run on second base with two out when the batter launched a drive to deep rightfield.  Hester raced back, dove headlong toward the base of the fence and came up with the catch.
 
“A heck of a catch; one of the best I’ve ever seen,” said Eagle Coach Russell Priest. “Our guys raced out there celebrating and hay-stacked him.”
  
East Bladen jumped in front with three runs in the first and withstood a couple of Clinton rallies. Sophmore Tyquan McMillian started the first inning with a single, stole second and third base and darted home on a wild pitch. 

West Bladen 1, Wallace-Rose Hill 0  Softball

 

Junior Morgan Sweeney doubled and scored the game’s only run, and junior Nicole Wyatt pitched a four-hit shutout as West Bladen edged Wallace-Rose Hill 1-0 in Four County Conference softball action.

  

Sweeney launched a double over the leftfielder leading off the Knight first inning. Senior Taylor Stephens moved Sweeney to third base with a sacrifice bunt, and Sweeney raced home on a wild pitch.

   

Wyatt, now 13-2, pitched a four-hitter and struck out six, walked a batter and hit a batter. Wallace-Rose Hill’s Amber Dixon pitched a two-hitter for the Lady Bulldogs.

  

Sweeney batted a perfect 2-2 with a walk and supplied the only West Bladen hits. Lead-off batter Chelsea Horning finished a perfect 3-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Bulldog hitters. Dixon added a single for the other Wallace hit.

 

Wallace-Rose Hill 2, West Bladen 0  Baseball

  

Lefthander Jacob Hargrove pitched a one-hitter and struck out six to lead Wallace-Rose Hill to a 2-0 Four County Conference victory at West Bladen Friday night.

  

Senior catcher John Waldrop belted a single for the only Knight hit off of Hargrove.

  

The Bulldogs capitalized on a pair of West Bladen miscues to score the only runs of the game in the fourth inning. Emmitt Herring stroked a fly ball to left that was misjudged into a double by the fielder. 

West Bladen Second in Conference Singles & Doubles Tournament
 
West Bladen's Luke Taylor and Bryan Labra finished in second and third place respectively in the Four County Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Wednesday. The Knight doubles team of Adam Rutland and Victor Jacome also reached the championship match and finished second.

Luke Taylor ( West Bladen) defeated Corey Gilpin (Clinton)  6-1, 6-2

Daniel Ko (Clinton) defeated Bryan Labra (West Bladen) 6-0, 6-0

Clarkton School of Discovery 15, Bladenboro 0   Softball
  
Kaley Smith pitched a three-inning shutout to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 15-0 Bladen Five Middle School Conference softball conference victory over Bladenboro Thursday.
  
Smith led off the three-run Lady Blue Devil first inning with a double and eventually scored the game’s first run on Faith Johnson’s sacrifice. Hannah DeVane and Anna Kate White drew walks, and Grace Anna Glenn knocked them in with a single for a 3-0 Clarkton lead.
  
Lady Bulldog control problems produced seven Clarkton runs in the second. Ayanna Avery, Smith, DeVane, Faith Johnson, White, Glenn and Indiyah Williams all drew walks, and Alexus Graham reached base on an error. 

West Columbus 5, West Bladen 3  Baseball
  
West Columbus capitalized on a couple of early errors to defeat West Bladen 5-3 Thursday night in non-conference baseball action at Cerro Gordo.
  
Junior Trevor Lesane cracked a one-out single in the Knight first inning and advanced on a wild pitch and a fly ball. Senior Parker Allen drove in Lesane with a single. Senior catcher John Waldrop belted a single, and Parker Allen scored the second West Bladen run on an error.
  
Two hits and an error produced a couple of first inning runs for the Vikings that tied the game 2-2.
  
The Knights retook the lead 3-2 with a run in the second. Junior C. J. Singletary scooted all the way to second base on a throwing error, then raced home as the Vikings made another error on Lesane’s grounder.

Lady Knights Unanimous Top Seed for Slugfest
  
West Bladen’s Lady Knights have been voted the unanimous No. 1 seed for the Robeson County Softball Slugfest that opens April 19 in Red Springs.
   
Coach Pam Stephens’ Lady Knights have been in the Slugfest title game the last three years and have won the last two championships. The seeding is determined by a vote of all the Slugfest coaches.
  
This season’s West Bladen team has posted an 11-2 record and already has two wins over Slugfest No. 2 seed Purnell Swett.  The Lady Knights also have a pair of victories over No. 8 seed St. Pauls who will be West Bladen’s first round opponent.
The winner of the West Bladen/St. Pauls game will meet the winner the first round between No. 4 Terry Sanford and No. 5 South Robeson in the second round.

The Bladen County Parks & Recreation Department is now taking registrations for their youth Spring Sports.
 
Registration for: BlastBall (co-ed; ages 3-5) continues until March 14th (fee –$25.00;
                            Girls Softball (ages 5-16) continues until April 21st (fee – $30.00);
                            Boys Baseball (ages 13-14) continues until April 21st (fee – $30.00)
