Textdrug1Be careful when texting. That’s the lesson an Elizabethtown man learned last weekend when his text was mistakenly sent to an undercover narcotics officer.

Brendon Ward, 23, of the 400 block of South Lower Street, turned himself in to Bladen County authorities Thursday after eluding capture Sunday night, Sheriff Jim McVicker said.

After unknowingly exchanging texts with the officer, Ward agreed to meet in an Elizabethtown parking lot Sunday to sell drugs, authorities say. As the officer approached the vehicle to buy the drugs, Ward realized his mistake and drove away, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Other officers gave chase, but Ward abandoned his vehicle near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and ran.

Ward is charged with conspiracy to sell marijuana, resist, delay and obstruct an officer, and felony flee to elude arrest, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was released on $3,000 bail.

“The odds that a wrong number would set in motion this chain of events and result in this arrest have to be very extremely high,” McVicker said. “But, stranger things have happened. My investigator seized on an opportunity and his quick thinking lead to another drug dealer being brought to justice.”
