Textdrug1The Elizabethtown man who mistakenly sent a text last April to an undercover narcotics officer offering to sell him marijuana was sentenced Wednesday morning to probation for resisting a public officer.

Brendan Ward, 24, was given a 60-day suspended sentence and two years supervised probation after agreeing to a plea deal in Bladen County Superior Court. He also was ordered to pay a $200 fine and court costs.

Ward will be allowed to serve his probation in Onslow County, where he now lives, and will get back his vehicle, which had been impounded, after paying storage costs.

The incident began after Ward unknowingly exchanged texts with the officer. Ward agreed to meet the officer in a parking lot beside Burger King in Elizabethtown to sell one-quarter ounce of marijuana for $100, according to court statements made Wednesday. As the officer approached the vehicle to buy the drugs, Ward realized his mistake and drove away, according to a summary of the charge. Officers who were stationed nearby prior to the deal gave chase, but Ward abandoned his vehicle near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and fled. He was not captured.

No marijuana was found in the vehicle. Ward turned himself in to authorities a couple of days later, and no marijuana was found on him.
