West Bladen’s Nicole Wyatt outdueled
Whiteville’s Malerie Leviner, and senior
Taylor Stephens scored the only run of the
game as West Bladen edged Whiteville 1-0
Saturday in non-conference softball action
The two aces and their defenses
controlled the game. Wyatt struck out 8
batters and allowed 2 singles. The only
other two Wolfpack runners reached on
errors. The Lady Knight righthander raised
her record to 2-0.
Leviner gave up 3 hits and an unearned
run. One other Lady Knight reached base on
an error, and another reached base on a
passed third strike. There were no walks
issued by either pitcher.
With two out in the West Bladen third
inning, Stephens’ ground ball eluded the
Whiteville secondbaseman. Stephens stole
second and third base, then dashed home on a
wild pitch as batter Alanna Ludlum faked a
Senior Courtney Thompson batted 2-3 lead
the West Bladen hitters, and senior Kaitlin
Valliere belted a single.
Thirdbaseman Stephens made a fine
backhanded stop with a runner at second base
and fired to first to end the fourth inning.
Lauren Worley led off the Whiteville
fifth with a single but was thrown out
attempting to steal by Ludlum, the freshman
catcher, for the Lady Knights.
Lauren Edwards cracked a single to left
to begin the Whiteville sixth inning.
Edwards advanced on Grace Nance’s sacrifice
bunt, but Stephens speared a shot toward the
hole and fired to secondbaseman Josie Ludlum
to catch the Lady Wolfpack runner off of
second base and end the threat.
Coach Pam Stephens’ Lady Knights were
scheduled to play at East Columbus Tuesday,
but the status of that game is uncertain due
to the East Columbus girls basketball team’s
qualifying for the Class 1-A Eastern
