Clarkton Fire Department responds to structure fire call

Wednesday evening Bladen County Firefighters and Bladen County EMS responded to a structure fire call on W.R. Lathan Street in Clarkton around 9 pm. According to Ms. Sherminka Smith her home started to smell like smoke and she realized smoke was starting to fill her home while she and her two children were inside.

According to Smith she saw smoke coming from clothes on top of her Dish Network box in one of the children’s rooms. Clarkton Fire Chief said, “The box was 180 degrees when I entered the home.”

The first responders were able to shut the power off to the box before anything caught fire and the smoke did not cause any damage according to Chief Mize.

Lt. Jerry Sweat from Bladenboro Fire Department said Bladen County EMS was called to the scene. Chief Mize canceled the call to EMS once he assessed the situation.

Smith said, “I’d rather be safe than sorry especially with my children at home. As soon as I smelled the smoke and then I saw it filling the house, I took the kids out and called 911.”

Clarkton, Bladenboro, Lisbon and Elizabethtown Fire Departments responded to the call. Family, friends, and Firefighters at the scene were in agreement, the lesson from this call is to remember not to put items on any type of electrical boxes.
