DUNCAN, SC – West Bladen grad Abbey Walters pitched a 3-hitter to pick up her seventh win of the season Sunday as her UNC-Pembroke Lady Braves edged Wingate 2-1 in the Mid South Classic.

Walters struck out 6, walked 2 and allowed one earned run as she raised her season record to 7-1 with a 0.93 Earned Run Average.

At the plate the senior righthander slammed a ground-rule double to right-centerfield in the first inning that drove in the first Lady Brave run. Walters raced home on Taylor Gephart’s single to give UNC-Pembroke an early 2-0 lead.

In their second game Sunday, the Lady Braves defeated Catawba 4-2. Walters batted 3-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. The Bladenboro native raked a single through the left side and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.

Walters singled and stole a base in the second but was stranded on base. In the fourth inning, she ripped a single through the middle to drive in a run.

The 5-7 performance at the plate in the double-header raised Walters’ batting average to .556 – the best in the Peach Belt Conference.

UNC-Pembroke, now 13-4 on the season, will travel to St. Andrews Wednesday for a double-header that begins at 1 p.m.
