shelter pic for board (2)The Bladen County Animal Control Board got a great report at their recent meeting regarding the 2015 yearly report on its animal shelter.

“Our shelter is doing exceptionally well,” said Animal Control Board President Mike Jackson.

The live release rate was better in 2015 than 2014. In 2014, 18 percent of the animals taken into the shelter were euthanized and in 2015, only 14 percent of all animals impounded were euthanized.

In 2015, there were 1,597 animals impounded and 989 animals were released to rescue groups, 222 were adopted, and 87 were returned to the owner.

“We’ve got a wonderful staff and they are doing a very good job. We’ve also got a rescue group. They are doing a great job as well,” said Jackson.

The rescue group, A Shelter Friend, works tirelessly to arrange adoptions and to rescue animals from the shelter.

He said the euthanasia rate is down from where it has been in the past and the adoption rate is increasing.

Jackson said the board is continuously seeking ways to improve the shelter and make upgrades.

“We’re looking to make more improvements. We are working on a project to install an exercise pen for animals at the shelter,” said Jackson.

Jackson said the transformation to the cat room has been tremendous and the shelter has also begun to offer a micro-chipping service at some of its events.

There is also a need for volunteers at the shelter, said Jackson.

“It’s a very rewarding opportunity to work at the shelter,” said Jackson.
