Rip Current riskThe Atlantic Ocean is becoming more active as three tropical systems have now formed, according to the National Weather Service Office in Wilmington.

As of Tuesday morning, Tropical Depression No. 8 is located about 150 miles east of Wilmington and possibly could strengthen to a Tropical Storm as it passes the Outer Banks later today and into Wednesday.

Tropical Depression No. 9 is located in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday morning and is expected to become Tropical Storm Hermine before crossing northern Florida and off the southeastern coast Friday and Saturday.  There is a 20 percent chance along the North Carolina coast for tropical storm force winds beginning early on Friday morning. There is also a potential for some coastal flooding.

Also, Hurricane Gaston is brewing in the central Atlantic but is currently no threat to land. There is a strong chance for rip currents along North Carolina beaches.
