ROWLAND – Daniel Carter pitched a one-hitter as Lumberton shut out West Bladen 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Robeson County Slugfest at South Robeson High School.

The junior left-hander struck out nine and walked four. The Knights only had one runner reach as far as third base.

Chandler Lennon had a one-out, first-inning single for West Bladen that moved Jeremy Hunt, who had walked, to third, but the next two batters were retired.

Lumberton scored twice in the first inning on a single by Alec Brewington, doubles by Evan Odum and Nolan Locklear and a two-out error.

The Pirates added another run in the third for a 3-0 lead. Tyler Jacobs had an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right by Brewington.

Lumberton ended the scoring with two more runs in the third on three singles.

West Bladen threatened to end the shutout in the sixth when Lennon and Trent West drew one-out walks, but the next two batters were retired.

West Bladen dropped to 3-6. The Knights are scheduled to play South Robeson in the consolation bracket Monday at 1 p.m. Fairmont beat South Robeson 6-4 on Saturday. West Bladen and South Robeson split two games earlier in the season.

Lumberton is 7-4 and will play Fairmont in the tournament semifinals Monday at 7 p.m.

In other first-round games Saturday, St. Pauls beat Red Springs 2-1 and Purnell Swett routed Hoke County 15-3.

The other games scheduled Monday are Red Springs vs. Hoke County at 10 a.m. and St. Pauls vs. Purnell Swett at 4 p.m. The final round is scheduled Tuesday.
