On June 7, 2015, an emergency call came into 911 and three individuals did more than just their jobs, they saved a little girl’s life. Today, Bladen County EMS held a special award ceremony to honor the commitment to excellence displayed by emergency responders in our community.

The emergency was that a baby wasn’t breathing. Dispatcher, Christie Jordan, alerted the EMS, the Sheriff’s Department, and stayed on the line with the caller, giving advice and instructions, and kept the caller calm. She told the caller what could be done immediately, and talked the individual through the worst type of phone call you might imagine. When Sargent Richard Bailey and Deputy Spenser Bryant arrived at the scene, the baby had no pulse and was not responsive.

Sargent Bailey and Deputy Bryant received awards today for Outstanding Performance in Patient Care relating to the June 7th event, wherein they saved a life when they began CPR on a 7 month old child.  Practicing CPR for a few minutes, and applying respiration by bag made all the difference. When EMS arrived the child was breathing and had a pulse. “When you are delivering emergency care, and your patient has no pulse, then a minute later there is a pulse because of your efforts, that is one of the best feelings in the world,” said Stephen Hester, EMS Captain, “That is what these guys were feeling.”

Christie Jordan, Telecommunications Specialist, also received an award for Outstanding Performance in Patient Care for the way she was able to coach a 911 caller in the emergency care of a non-responsive infant, and keep them calm and focused until EMS arrived on the scene. “Who can say what you three have accomplished by saving this one life,” said Hester, “We may not know until this little girl is 35 years old, but we will see.”

We are very fortunate in Bladen County to have such knowledgeable, dedicated, and caring professionals watching out for our health and safety.
