Bladen County SportsTar Heel Boys 43, East Arcadia 42

Eddie Perez tossed in the game-winning basket, and teammate Emonta Smith poured in a game-high 18 points as Tar Heel edged East Arcadia 43-42 in the opening round of the Bladen Five Middle School Conference Tournament at Tar Heel Monday night.

Coach Arthur Morrisey’s Tar Heel team advances to Wednesday’s 5:15 semi-final game against Clarkton School of Discovery.

Tar Heel trailed until Perez flipped in a floater from the lane to put the home team ahead 43-42. The East Arcadia Panthers missed on their next possession, and Irvin Hernandez grabbed the rebound for Tar Heel allowing Smith and the hometown Panthers to dribble out the clock.

“Emonta put the team on his back tonight,” said Coach Morrisey. “He was the stand-out player in the game.”

Hernandez finished with 11 points, and teammate Tyre Boykin drained a 3-point shot and totaled 6 points. Smith also threw in a 3-point shot for the winners.

D. Gregg topped the East Arcadia scoring with 12 points, and B. Bowen followed with 9 points. S. Thomas pumped in 8 points for the visitors, and Deonte Johnson added 6 points.

“East Arcadia came to play today,” said Coach Morrisey. “But my guys played hard in the fourth quarter and stayed alive to play another day.”
