The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office has received a donation from the Tar Heel Freewill Baptist Church. The gift will enable Sheriff McVicker to put new car numbers on all the marked units in the fleet. These new decals also carry a significant and special motto: “In God We Trust.”
“I feel we have been honored by this church, the congregation and their deacons and minister,” said McVicker. “It is not often we have folks reach out to us in a positive manner. I and all my deputies are honored by this gesture.”
McVicker said he was approached by the Pastor of the church, Reverend Thomas Tedder who said he and his congregation wanted to do this for the Sheriff’s Office.
“I got the idea from another Sheriffs Department in Rutherford County,” said Tedder.
Rev. Tedder added after discussing it and thinking about it he brought the idea before his congregation and they were very much in favor of it.
“We all know that law enforcement has been having a rough time lately in the media and public opinion,” said Tedder. “We wanted to show the officers that we supported them and believed in them. We wanted them to know we pray for them every day and we believe there are more people in this county who feel the same as we do. There are so many people who believe in the power of God and his love and protection. This is just our way of showing our love and faith for the Lord.”
Tedder was quick to say neither he nor the church did this for any kind of recognition other than it was the right thing to do.
“I know every deputy feels honored to have these words on their vehicle,” said McVicker. “These are more than words; they are a way of life. I speak for all my officers when I say thank you not only to the members of Tar Heel Freewill Baptist Church but to every citizen in this county for letting us protect and serve them. We take the duties entrusted to us very seriously and will do our best to live up to what law enforcement officers should be.”
