A fire erupted at JC Pallet Company in Bladenboro on Sunday night that kept firefighters busy throughout the morning on Monday. The first call reporting the fire came in at 2:15 a.m.  Bladen County Fire Marshal Bradley Kinlaw said that the fire is contained and fire crews will be monitoring it throughout the day.

“We’ve got a good barrier around it. The town of Bladenboro and nearby residents are going to have to deal with some smoke for awhile,” said Kinlaw.

The Bladenboro Fire Department is also alerting residents to the fact their water may be appear muddy or discolored temporarily due to fire. They also advise that residents may experience periods of smoke in the area of the fire as well.

He said officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire. “What has burned so far has been scrap wood and pallets. They lost a few good pallets,” said Kinlaw of the damage. One piece of equipment belonging to the pallet company was also lost.

“Those guys did a great job keeping the fire away from the buildings and the good materials,” said Kinlaw of the efforts of the firefighters.

He said there was one explosion early on in the fire, but Kinlaw said they were not sure of the cause just yet. Kinlaw said on Monday morning the plans called for allowing the fire to burn itself out.

One firefighter was transported to Cape Fear Valley-Bladen Healthcare and treated for minor injuries.

Responding to the fire were Bladenboro, Clarkton, Dublin, Elizabethtown, N. Whiteville, Whiteville, White Lake and Bay Tree Lakes fire departments. Also responding were Bladen County EMS, Bladenboro Police Department and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.
