Cody Butler and Holden Clark pitched a two hitter to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to an 18-2 Bladen Five Middle School victory over host Bladenboro Wednesday afternoon.

In the first inning, both teams had two runners reach base but were not able to score

Clarkton took the lead with five runs in the top of the second. Cody Butler singled, stole second and raced home on Shy Pone’s single. Spencer Scott belted another single.

Jake Evans drove in Pone with a single. Dan Tatum cracked a single that plated Scott. Greyson Heustess followed with a single, before Pierce Melvin hammered a double to deep left that scored Evans and Tatum.

Clarkton scored four more runs in the top of the third inning. Cody Butler singled and stole second. Eric Chancy walked and Shy Pone was hit by pitch to load the bases.

Evans knocked in Butler and Chancy with a single. Tatum’s single brought in Evans. Melvin swatted a single that scored Pone and Evans for a 9-0 lead.

In the Bladenboro third, Lant Pait drew a walk and came around to score on a single by Logan West.

Clarkton got two runners on in the top of the fourth but did not score.

Bladenboro whittled the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Drake Little walked and eventually scored.

Clarkton added two runs in the top of the fifth. Tatum walked, stole second and darted home on Melvin’s single. After Melvin stole second, Holden Clark drove him in with a single.

The Blue Devils stretched their lead with seven runs in the top of the sixth. “The umpire wanted to call it when it was 11-2,” said Bladenboro Coach Steve Thurman. “The time wasn’t up, and I told him the kids deserve to play.”

Pone led off the sixth with a single, Scott reached on an error, and Evans walked to load bases. Tatum drove in Pone and Scott with a single, and Melvin’s single plated Evans.

Clark connected for a single that scored Tatum and Melvin. Butler slammed a double to deep left that scored Clark. Chancy rapped a single and scored the final Blue Devil run.

Butler pitched the first 4 innings and picked up the win for Clarkton. Clark worked the final 2 innings in relief.

Melvin led the Blue Devil hitters with 3 singles and a double. Butler finished with 2 singles and a double. Tatum also delivered 3 hits for the winners.
Heustess, Clark, Chancy and Evans smacked 2 hits each for CSD, and Scott added a single.

“Our parents were not happy with all the bases that were stolen after they got the ten-run lead,” said Coach Thurman. “We played 16 players and a courtesy runner. I think they played 9 and a courtesy runner.”
