 ELIZABETHTOWN – Elizabethtown’s Zach Meares pitched 6.2 innings of no-hit baseball Thursday, before settling for a one-hit 8-0 shutout victory over Clarkton School of Discovery in Bladen Five Middle School Conference baseball action.
 
Xavier McKoy spoiled the no-hit bid with a 2-out single in the seventh inning. Meares struck out the next batter to end the game. For the game Meares struck out 5, walked 3 and hit 2 batters.
 
The Cougars made a couple of stellar defensive plays behind Meares. Secondbaseman Drew Sholar started a second to firstbaseman double play with a tag and a flip to firstbaseman Rasean McKoy in the fourth inning.
 
In the seventh inning, the Blue Devil lead-off batter lined an apparent hit to rightfield, but Jay McKoy fielded the ball and threw out the runner at first with a strike to Rasean McKoy.
 
After a scoreless first inning, Ethan Johnson drew a one-out walk in the Cougar second. Jay McKoy and Rasean McKoy raked back-to-back singles to leftfield to load the bases.
 
A fielder’s choice forced out Johnson at the plate, but Jordan Robinson slammed a 2-run double that scored Jay McKoy and Rasean McKoy and put Elizabethtown ahead 2-0.
 
After two were out in the Cougar fifth, Brady Hollingsworth, Fred Wooten, Johnson and Jay McKoy drew consecutive walks. Hollingsworth and Wooten dashed home on wild pitches to stretch the Elizabethtown lead to 4-0.
 
Sholar reached base on an error to start the Cougar sixth inning, and Meares belted a one-out single. Cody Butler hammered a 2-run double that plated Sholar and Meares.
 
Hollingsworth and Wooten drew walks, and Butler raced home on a wild pitch, before Johnson knocked in Hollingsworth with a single that grew the lead to 8-0.
 
The Cougars totaled 7 hits in the game. Robinson and Cody Butler smashed 2-run doubles, and Meares, Wooten, Johnson, Jay McKoy and Rasean McKoy smacked one single each.
 
 Johnson drove in a run, and Sholar, Jay McKoy, Rasean McKoy, Butler, Wooten, Hollingsworth and Meares scored one run each.
 
Coach Tripp Lancaster’s Cougars remained unbeaten at 5-0 in the league and will travel to Bladenboro Tuesday. Clarkton will host Tar Heel Tuesday.
