Khadijah Jones sank 4 free throws, and Katie Evans tossed in a basket as Clarkton School of Discovery rallied for a 25-24 Bladen Five Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Elizabethtown in the opening game of the Bladen Five Middle School Conference Tournament Monday at Bladenboro.

Elizabethtown took a 20-19 lead into the final quarter, before the late heroics by Jones and Evans. Patience Ward and Magdiel Gonzalez threw in baskets for the Lady Cougars in the period.

Ward fired in 8 of her 10 points in the first period, and Lavada Jackson and Chasity Carter added baskets as the Lady Cougars raced to a 12 -4 lead. Jones pumped in 2 baskets for the Clarkton points in the quarter.

Jones lit up the scoreboard with a trio of  baskets in the second period. Abbie Cross connected for a basket, and Tara Rogers hit a free throw as the Lady Blue Devils trimmed the Elizabethtown lead to 18-13 at halftime.

Two baskets by Carter and one by Gonzales kept the Lady Cougars in front.

Jones popped in 2 more baskets in the third period, and Lorna Mendell worked the paint for another bucket as Clarkton trimmed the margin to 20-19.

Another Gonzalez basket kept Elizabethtown ahead.

Jones topped all scorers with 18 points in the game. Carter and Gonzalez followed Ward on the Elizabethtown scoring list with 6 points each.

Coach Chris Callihan’s Lady Blue Devils, now 5-2, advance to the Thursday’s girls championship game at 5 p.m. against Bladenboro.  Elizabethtown concludes the season with a 4-3 record.
