NC DOTThe N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a contract to upgrade the intersection at N.C. 87 and U.S. 701 in Elizabethtown to increase safety for motorists in Bladen County. The contract is to upgrade the intersection from an intersection with a traffic light to an interchange.

The intersection is located in close proximity to the State Employees Credit Union. There are around 14,000 motorists per day going through the intersection at U.S. 701 and N.C. 87. State representatives noticed the traffic volume along with other factors proved the need for safety improvements at this intersection.

Work on the intersection has been moving right along. Since the construction began a couple citizens asked BladenOnline.com if the improvements are really needed. A large majority of Bladen County residents surveyed by BladenOnline.com said they felt the upgrade was needed and are glad the state has taken action. The contract amount of $13.2 million was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Company.

The completion of the new traffic flow is expected in September 2017. Motorists should expect minor delays during the construction of the project due to lane closures and are encouraged to exercise caution while traveling through the project work zone.
