Walters beat out a bunt single in the third inning, smacked a single to centerfield in the seventh inning, and singled off the pitcher in the ninth inning. Now, there are 16 teams remaining in the NCAA Playoffs, only one North Carolina team. Clarkton native and UNCW golfer Kayla Thompson shot 75-75-75=226 to finish 23rd in the River Landing Classic played this past week in Wallace. Eleven college lady golf teams participated in this three day event. The UNCW team finished 4th in the tourney with a score of 27 over par. Penn State took the title with a score of 14 over par. The Southeastern Fellowship of Senior Golfers, an organization of over 100 area seniors, began their 37 tourney schedule on Tuesday, March 7 with their first tournament being held at Land O’ Lakes Golf Course near Whiteville. A total of 74 players participated with the winning team of Mike White, Emory White, Charles Bridger and Ricky Walters shooting a 22-under score of 50. Wyatt Long of Raleigh – a young fisherman with Bladen County roots – and his fishing teammate, Hunter McKee, finished fifth in the Cabela’s Lake Hartwell Early Bird Challenge. By finishing fifth Long (wearing the white shirt) and McKee qualified for the 2017 High School Championship Tournament to be held on Pickwick Lake at the intersection of the states of Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee in June. Long and McKee totaled 12.04 pounds of bass in the Lake Hartwell and finished just one pound out second place. The weekend of April 22-23 will find three triathlons scheduled for White Lake. On Saturday April 22 at 7 a.m. the White Lake Spring Half 2017 will be held. This consist of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run. The second event will take place on the same day, Saturday 22, at 8:30 a.m. This will be the White Lake International 2017. That is what the members fo the Elizabethtown Rotary Club learned on Wednesday during their luncheon meeting at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery. Gaye Davis, a teacher at West Bladen High school, spoke to the group about the importance of becoming an organ donor. Davis said Bladen County ranks 97th in the state in organ donation. East Bladen head football Coach Robby Priest has been named as an assistant coach for the North Carolina team in this year’s Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. The game will be played on Dec. 16 at Gibbs Stadium on the Wofford College campus in Spartanburg, SC.
