Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin and SHIIP Director Van Braxton present Carla Obiol with the Jim Long Outstanding SHIIP Service Award.

RALEIGH— Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin and SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, congratulate the winners of four statewide awards for their outstanding work in providing free, unbiased counseling about Medicare and other health insurance issues to seniors in North Carolina.

This year’s awards were presented at the Annual North Carolina SHIIP Coordinators’ Training Conference in Greensboro on June 25:

SHIIP County of the Year is Brunswick. SHIIP’s coordinating site in Brunswick County is Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. SHIIP volunteers provided counseling to 3,552 clients in their county this year and reached out to nearly one million residents through various efforts.

SHIIP Coordinator of the Year: Bernice Bennett works with SHIIP’s coordinating site in Anson County, the Grace Senior Center. Through outreach efforts, she and her volunteers reached nearly 102,000 people and counseled 921 Medicare beneficiaries this past year.
Mickey Hanula Volunteer of the Year: Larry Bradbury counsels in SHIIP’s Wake County coordinating sites, the Five Points Center for Active Adults in Raleigh, the Garner Senior Center and the East Wake Senior Center in Wendell. Larry has been a SHIIP volunteer for 5 years. This past year, he counseled 239 beneficiaries and worked at the SHIIP office in Raleigh during Medicare’s Annual Election Period.

Jim Long Outstanding SHIIP Service Award: Carla Obiol, currently NCDOI’s Senior Deputy of the Consumer Assistance Group, started with SHIIP when it was established in 1986 and has been instrumental in the development and success of the program. Carla was one of SHIIP’s first trainers and served as the SHIIP Director from 1992 – 2010. She has been a strong supporter and advocate for North Carolina seniors and people with disabilities for more than twenty years, serving on numerous boards and advisory committees.

“I congratulate all of the 2015 award winners and am honored to present these awards to these deserving people,” Goodwin said. “SHIIP provides a valuable service across the state, and we would not be able to reach so many of North Carolina’s Medicare beneficiaries without the dedication and commitment of our coordinators and volunteers.”

SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance that offers free, objective information about Medicare, Medicare prescription drug coverage, Medicare Advantage, long-term care insurance and other health insurance issues. SHIIP has nearly 1,000 trained volunteers across the state providing one-on-one counseling in all 100 counties.
