Smithfield Packing shut down because of roof problemThe Smithfield Plant in Tar Heel was evacuated at 3:30 a.m. due to a chemical reaction that ocurred between sodium hypochlorite and Acid while a cleaning process was taking place. The chemical was contained to the inside of the building, according to Bladen County Emergency Management Director Bradley Kinlaw.

All employees of the plant were evacuated as well as several homes in the area as a precaution.

Kinlaw said emergency crews are working to ventilate the building, which when complete, will allow all employees to return to work. Seven employees were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Responding to assist were Tar Heel Fire Department, Tobermory Fire Department, Dublin Fire Department, Elizabethtown Fire Department, White Oak Fire Department, Bladenboro Fire Department, Tar Heel EMS, Bladenboro EMS, Bladen County EMS, Cape Fear EMS, Robeson EMS, Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, NC Highway Patrol, Bladen County Emergency Management, Cumberland County Emergency Management, NC Emergency Management, Fayetteville, Fire Department Haz-Mat team.
