Retailers are reporting strong sales during the Christmas shopping season. Stores in Bladen County are reporting that Christmas sales were up this year.

Mike Suggs, owner of Fishers Mens and Ladies Shop, said, “It went very well. We’re very pleased.” He said sales were up in the store over last year.

“We had a really good Christmas last year. This year topped last year,” said Suggs.

He added that the after-Christmas sale is currently taking place and all winter merchandise is 30 to 50 percent off and includes prior sale items.

Ricky Leinwand, owner of Leinwand’s Department Store, said, “It went extremely well.”

He said that the store started promoting their Christmas sale during November. Leinwand said the sale started in November and just built momentum that carried the store through the Christmas shopping season. Leinwand also said that customers from Bladen County as well as Lumberton, Fayetteville and Clinton and other surrounding locations also helped to boost sales.

Leinwand said the store saw a rough October due to Hurricane Matthew but that November and December were both strong months in terms of sales.  “Overall, we had a really good season,” said Leinwand.

Ray Britt, owner of Ray’s Furniture & Jewelry Liquidators, echoed Leinwand and Suggs. “We had a very good season. We’re very pleased.”

He said the store saw an increase in sales over last year as well. Britt said that the Christmas sale is continuing through the New Year. Al Jewelry is 50 to 90 percent off, said Britt.

“If they ever wanted a nice piece (of jewelry), now is the time to get it,” said Britt.
