Plans for new Bladen County Detention continue to move forward. A pre-bid conference was held Wednesday and the bid opening is scheduled for the first week of August. The new jail and sheriffs office will be located off Smith Circle Drive, across the street from the Cooperative Extension Office (Powell-Melvin Ag Center).

Commissioners approved a sealed bid offer from Gooden Land and Timber to harvest the timber on the future jail site. The Gooden bid was one of two received. The bid was for $3,600 to “furnish all labor, equipment and materials necessary for the complete harvest and removal (clear cut) of all timber products.

The board also approved an outreach plan for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program. The planning involves several agencies with a committee meeting set for November 12, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bladen County Department of Social Services. Applications will be accepted beginning December 1, 2015.

A fundraiser is planned for 5 year old Ayven Lennon to assist his family with medical expenses. The Bladenboro fund-raiser will be held Saturday, August 1 at the historical building. Chicken and BBQ plate sale, bounce houses, water games, face painting and a silent auction will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations are welcomed.

Bladen County Committee of 100 Annual meeting is planned for Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Powell-Melvin Agricultural Center. Membership fees are due. Individual memberships are $100 and business memberships are $200. A business membership allows two voting members and two meals. Additional meals will be available. Call 645-2417 for more info.
