Before the NCHSAA Class 2-A Girls Play-off Brackets were announced Saturday, West Bladen Coach Pam Stephens thought that her Lady Knights might be going up to the Jacksonville area for their first round game. Jacksonville looks like a short trip now as West Bladen is headed 264 miles up to Currituck County in Barco.

The Purple Lady Knights of West Bladen finished third in the Four County Conference with an 8-6 league record and were 12-12 overall. Sophmore Laikyn Pait (5.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game) leads the West Bladen offense.

Sophmore forward Akira Grimes scores at a 5.4 ppg clip and grabs 5 rebounds per contest. Seniors Delasia Richardson and Breanna Jackson pull down 8.4 rebounds per game each to lead the Lady Knights on the boards.

Jackson contributes 5 ppg, and Richardson adds 4.1 ppg. Senior guard Miriam Mendoza fills up the stat sheet with 4.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.4 assists per game. Sophmore Logan Autry (3.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg) and sophmore Alanna Ludlum (3.4 ppg and 2.6 rpg) split time in the back-court.

Waiting for West Bladen in Barco are the Currituck County Red Lady Knights who posted an 8-4 record to finish second in the Northeastern Coastal Conference. Coach Matthew Dixon’s team was 14-7 overall.

Five-seven senior Amanda Gerni has bombed in 59 of her 96 3-point field goal attempts and tops the Currituck scoring with an 18.7 ppg average. Six-foot sophmore Lindsey Lykins tallies 11.8 points and almost 5 rebounds per game.

Freshman Lauren Gerni has connected on 14 of 21 3-point shots to average 9.2 ppg and leads Currituck with 6.5 rebounds per game. Five-nine senior Nichole Bopp, sophmore Jayne Fallon and 4-11 freshman point guard Jessica Smith are other key contributors for the Red Lady Knights.

The winner of Tuesday’s 6 p.m. game between West Bladen/Currituck contest will advance to a second round gameThursday against the Bunn/Elizabeth City Northeastern winner.
